Therapeutic Approaches
Art Therapy
Art Therapy can look quite similar to traditional mental health counseling. A typical session involves an artmaking process in the presence of a credentialed Art Therapist who has the specific clinical training to help you safely navigate your goals & needs. When introducing art therapy to individuals, the biggest concern I often hear is related to talent & ability. Art therapy doesn't require that you have any previous artistic skill or creative experience. In fact, you don't even have to know how to draw a straight line or a stick figure! The artwork created in session does not have to be what's considered "pretty" or "good." Instead, the art interventions presented are utilized to address a therapeutic goal or concern, promote change, and enhance self-reflection. The art in art therapy becomes the vehicle through which therapeutic change can occur. Art therapy is focused on the process of the artmaking and what it is doing for you therapeutically rather than the aesthetic value. I, as the art therapist will not judge your artwork. Instead, I may ask open ended questions regarding the visual content or symbolism within to better understand your experiences.
Mental Health Counseling
In addition to being an Art Therapist, I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. This means that talk therapy and verbal processing is in my scope of practice. In a typical session, I will likely utilize traditional talk therapy approaches in combination with art therapy practice depending on your preferences and individual needs. Verbal processing & talk therapy techniques become very useful when discussing the artwork and progress made.
My Approach
In my practice, I utilize a holistic approach, taking into consideration the whole person, including mind, body & spirit connectivity. I believe in working together to identify presenting issues & assist you in creating lasting change through gained insight, coping skills & reframed thinking. You as the client are the expert of your reality. I am here to help you see things differently & challenge your thinking when or if it becomes harmful to your well-being. I tend to implement strengths-based approaches, as I believe everyone embodies internal strengths that can be utilized to overcome adversity.
I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Strengths-Based, Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapy & Art Therapy to address various mental health concerns. If you've found that in the past, talk therapy has been difficult or intimidating, the unique non-verbal properties of art therapy may work in ways that verbal articulation alone has not. When the words feel impossible, the art brings voice to your internal struggles or emotions. I am here to hold that space, help you to create positive change, and promote an enhanced overall well-being.
Your feelings are valid. I provide a space where your authentic self is valued and appreciated. Your wellness is my priority & I hope to empower you in this journey!
